Diploma Framing

Diploma Framing...unlimited possibilities

Displaying diplomas, licenses and certifications

Linda Harvey, Cleveland Area Manager at Frames Unlimited

Displaying your diplomas, licenses, and certifications in a professional manner in your office can showcase your level of education and achievements. If you look around your office, are these documents enhanced by the frame that surrounds them, or are they looking rather dated and worn?

As a professional picture framer with over 20 years of experience, I’m often surprised by the condition of these documents hanging in medical and dental offices.

The components of a well-framed document are an attractive, up-to-date frame, glass that prevents fading and reflection, and acid-free backing materials, which can prevent deterioration and discoloration. Matting (a paper or fabric border) is optional, but can increase the perceived importance of the document and often makes for a more visually pleasing piece. At Frames Unlimited, we also offer restoration services, which may be able to correct damage caused by light, age, dirt or moisture.

If cost is an issue, our stores carry pre-made frames that will fit the size of your diploma, costing less than a custom-sized frame.

If you have a certification that will expire and need to be replaced, it’s possible to set up the back of the frame to make that easy to do.

You likely invested a lot in your education, licenses, and certifications. Consider investing a little in the documents that represent these achievements. If the frames you chose shortly after graduation still display your important documents, it’s time for a trip to your local Frames Unlimited to explore preserving and improving the presentation of these valuable documents.

The Cumberland Frame Collection

We are continually refreshing and adding to our picture frame selection every season (we have over 1500+ to be exact!). One of our newer lines is made of natural American hardwoods. These beautiful, quality wood frames are proudly made by Larson Juhl in their Ashland, Wisconsin USA.

Over 70% of the frames produced in Ashland are made from American hardwoods such as Ash, Cherry, Hard Maple, Oak or Walnut. Woods are chosen from North American producers that have excellent harvesting programs that comply with federal, state and local guidelines. Ashland’s recycling program ensures excess lumber has a second life. Wood shavings are distributed to local farmers who use them in bedding for animals. Larger pieces are sent to the local paper mill and power plant to help generate steam energy for electricity and heat.

The simple clean natural stain finishes and design of the Cumberland collection can enhance and compliment various styles of artwork. We look forward to designing a one-of-a-kind project that will last more then a lifetime. Join us on Pinterest for framing ideas and inspiration.

Why UV Protection Glass?

Frames unlimited cares about your project.
We offer the highest quality 99% UV protective glass in three options:

  • Conservation Clear Glazing (99% UV Protection)
  • Conservation Non-Glare (Anti-Reflective and 99% UV Protection)
  • Museum Glass (Optimal Clarity, Anti-Reflective and 99% UV Protection)

Without at least 97% UV protection, framed pieces can age and fade more rapidly.  Indoor and outdoor UV light rays contribute to severe color loss, paper embrittlement and deterioration of framed pieces. These effects are both cumulative and irreversible. The materials that make up the piece, the paper or fabric on which the image is displayed, may become brittle. Photos may appear yellow or stained with ghostly silver deposits rising to the surface. Once damage from light has occurred, it can never be reversed. What can do to minimize this type of damage before it happens? Choose UV protective glass and acid-free framing materials.

While it is very important to reduce UV light exposure, this alone will not eliminate fading and other deterioration.  Heat, pollution, moisture, the materials that make up the piece as well as poor quality framing materials are all contributing factors.  Using conservation framing techniques and materials as well as properly displaying and caring for your framed piece will help minimize the risk of damage caused by these factors.

Care should be given when displaying your framed piece to avoid unnecessary exposure to light.  Since some light is required for you to enjoy and see your framed pieces, it is all the more important to reduce any damage from UV light, by using glass with at least 97% UV protection.

We can help you select framing materials that will protect your framed pieces for years to come. We recommend glass with at least 97% UV protection to reduce the damaging effects of UV light. UV protection will not eliminate fading 100%, so you should use care when displaying your framed pieces.  Direct light exposure for any duration should be avoided.  Hanging or displaying the piece in a controlled lighting environment with low humidity is recommended.

feb2017show#4

About Kelly Walkotten
Kelly combines her passions of photography and writing to bring the wonders of nature to others. Through her travels, she captures images for publication. Then, through research, writing, and presentation, she brings nature to an audience and teaches them about the habitat and behavior of unique creatures from around the world. She is an avid scuba diver, whose images, articles, and blogs have brought the undersea world to readers of the PSA Journal and Fem Worldview.com. These publications have featured articles by Kelly that include photos from diving the Caribbean, the Pacific, and Indo-Pacific. Her favorite destination is Indonesia, where she has spent fourteen weeks above and below the sea. She has been published in many other print and web publications. Through her extensive use and familiarity with photo editing software, she has developed lessons and enjoys teaching Adobe Suite products of Photoshop, Elements and Lightroom. Kelly lives in the greater Grand Rapids area and her images have been exhibited in many venues around West Michigan including ArtPrize and Festival of the Arts.

About Steven Scherbinski
Living in West Michigan, with easy access to the lakeshore, urban areas and open spaces tuned Steven Scherbinski’s eye to a large range of subjects. His artistic viewpoint focuses on the things that most people pass by. The small or overlooked but beautiful things. He also captures the gorgeous light that falls in the West Michigan landscape. Scherbinski is a diversified photographer using both a modern digital camera as well as a 50 year old film camera. He also prints his own photographic prints. Using historical processes, some 100+ years old, the artist finds it gives the photographs a unique, one-of-a-kind essence. For older processes, such as Cyanotypes, Van Dyke Brown and Platinum, he uses fine art papers and hand coats them, ensuring that each one is different from the previous print. Steven Scherbinski exhibits his work in the Saugatuck Artists Collective at 403 Water St., Saugatuck, MI

Custom framing shows off an impressive career

So what do you do with a cache of awards and photos too precious to tuck away?

We caught up with Emily Taylor at her home in Cleveland Heights, Ohio to view her daughter’s, Felice, trophy room. It has been years in the making and quite an impressive accomplishment. Felice has been a competitive rower since 2007, winning multiple awards in the World Rowing Championships, and most recently in the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

Since the collection spans years and different types of objects (photos, posters, certificates and medals), each frame was chosen to compliment the item it holds. The result is an eclectic mix that is tied together by the theme of Felice’s rowing career. Careful arrangement guides the eye around the room. The variety of design also helps each item to stand on its own in a sea of awards.

We are so honored to creatively contribute to this remarkable display’s growth! If you have been considering a large collage in your home or office, let any of our designers help piece your story together in a cohesive display. Find your Frames Unlimited creative team here.

Gifting With Picture Framing

Framing as a Gift

Don’t leave once-in-a-lifetime memories hidden away in a box! You can gift and remember those special moments with custom framing.

Picture framing is the perfect gift for yourself or for the special people in your life. It preserves and commemorates the special moments in ones lifetime that will be cherished for years to come. Here are some recent framing projects (with customer testimonials) that celebrate special events with unique custom framing. Creatively designed and crafted by our exceptional team in Bloomfield, MI.

Framing Design and Customer Testimonials

Design 1

“I received a very unique wedding invitation and ultimately gave it as a cherished wedding gift to my family member. The creativity and fresh approach was delightful – artful – and very experiential.
Thank you.  ~Sandra

Wedding Invitation Framed

Framing design elements include: Suede matting with an antique silver fillet floated above the wedding invitation. Shadow box lining was built around the frame interior to create more depth and interest. Acid free matting and 99% UV protective glass is used to preserve the invitation.

Design 2

“These place cards were made by our grandson for our Passover Seder 2016. It is very special to us! The creative team at Frames Unlimited in Bloomfield, MI were very helpful and full of creative suggestions.” ~J.

Framed Place Holders

Framing design elements include: Place cards are float-mounted at an angle on acid-free matting. A blue french line was hand drawn around the place card grouping to visually pull the design together and add another complimentary color. 99% UV protective glass is used to preserve the artwork.

Cavaliers NBA Championship Framing

PROJECT

Our Woodmere, OH store finished this project a couple weeks ago. The customer and her husband went to game 7 of the NBA finals this year out in Oakland, CA. They had the front page from the Cleveland Plain Dealer for the day after the game and the day the Cavaliers flew back into Cleveland, but they also brought in the front page of the San Francisco Chronicle which was REALLY cool for us to see!

DESIGN

The customer set everything down on the counter and asked our team in Ohio to make something creative for her, which is always a fun challenge! She gave the staff a basic idea of what she wanted and our talented framers got to work. They cut a reverse fillet around the front pages and “floated” them to make it the main focal point. After the papers, the second highest floated objects were the customer’s personal items, which were the tickets from game 7 and photos of the couple in Cavaliers gear during the finals. As a backdrop, the staff used other pieces from the original newspaper and made a collage. For the shadowbox lining they used headlines from the papers.

PROCESS

Our knowledgeable employees mounted objects on acid free materials, treated the newspapers with acid neutralizing spray and used UV protective glass, all necessary to keep newsprint intact for longevity.  The customer was so excited to finally pick this up. She jumped up and down and gave Sarah (their Frames Unlimited designer) a hug when she saw it. Thank you for entrusting Frames Unlimited with all of your valuable sports memorabilia. We thoroughly enjoy preserving these special memories for a lifetime.

Family photos with portrait picture framing

From our new feature line of Larson Juhl frames, the Lille Moulding perfectly compliments this portrait from Visage Photography in Rocky River,OH.

A hand-wrapped suede fabric mat with flexible fillet and gold fillet were chosen to accent photo details and frame.  Family photos are a great starting point when looking for new art for the home.Acid-free matboard and backing structure surround the photograph while UV protective glass blocks out 99% light that fades images over time.

Custom Framing is Special

WHY THIS IS SPECIAL

“My sweetheart was a championship oarsman at Cornell University and competed in the 1967 Henley Royal Regatta in England, winning its cup. Rowing has been perhaps his proudest accomplishment and he has remained close to his teammates over the years. I wanted to surprise him- a collection of memorabilia from those events that he could enjoy everyday. A wall of photos, paintings, and of course, the medal and victory cup.”

MY EXPERIENCE AT FRAMES UNLIMITED

“I could never have imagined how each piece alone (and special in its own right) could be assembled and coordinated into such a wonderful and moving collection. The staff helped me select for each a unique and different treatment that not only celebrated his university colors, but when placed together are spectacular. Thank you Audra, Cameron, Jennifer, Bridget and Danielle at my Frames Unlimited Bloomfield, MI for making this surprise so special. It brought tears to his eyes.”  Mary K.

The caring staff at our Bloomfield, MI store took the time to display and hang all of the pieces in their gallery for Mary’s surprise to her sweetheart.  Thank you Mary, for giving us the opportunity and honor in framing these special memories.

We recently held our 30th Annual Associate’s Art Show at our Okemos, MI location.  All the art in the show is work done by Associates that work for Frames Unlimited; the show gives them a chance to show their talents and to share their work with our customers and others within the Frames Unlimited Family.

There were over 90 amazing works of art this year from over 40 Associates.  An opening reception was held for our customers and our Associates that included food, drinks and great conversations.  You can see more images from the show on our Facebook page here.

A Map of Memories

Sometimes we frame artwork because it is pleasing to the eye, but quite often we frame something that has specific meaning and stories for our customers…

This project for Diane at our Bloomfield, MI store is a map of Cuba. Here is the story behind the map: “My father was born in Cuba in 1929 and came to the US in 1940. He passed away in 2012 never being able to return to Havana. My husband and I went to Cuba in March. Upon return, I found this map among my father’s paperwork and thought it would be great to frame it as a memento of our trip and my dad’s childhood.”

The map looks great framed with generous mat proportions, two French lines and a fillet for depth…but the memories and stories that will be shared when family members, friends and guests see the framed map go well beyond!
